On the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd February 2014, Chris Mayhew came to Broome to provide two days of professional development to the Theatre Kimberley circus trainers and parent helpers. Chris’ background includes being a former national level competitor in both artistic gymnastics and sports acrobatics and he has performed worldwide as a principal adagio dancer and circus artist. I was fortunate to attend as a parent helper and I learned a great deal over the weekend. Chris’ skills and enthusiasm educated, informed and entertained the group who learned new techniques, practiced old skills and covered the all-important safety issues. A whole range of skills was covered including aerials, adagio (acro-balance), juggling, handstands, tumbling and rolla-bolla. Each emerging trainer was responsible for training the whole group in a five minute segment. Constructive criticism and feedback was given. I thought all the young trainers did a fantastic job. Unbelievably, Jake (14) taught me to juggle in his five minutes of being a trainer!
