Youth Theatre Project
The Aim of the Youth Theatre project is to develop a theatre arts programme for the young people of Broome. Develop skills that are transferable to other work places. Skills such as
- Creativity
- Problem solving
- Self confidence
- Self Esteem
- Reliability
- Verbal language
- Non verbal language
- Literacy - visual and written
These skills will allow participants to pursue further careers and further training in performing arts and the work place in general. It will provide the community with a group of performers for upcoming theatre works in the town and WA community in general.
Our program during the next three to five years reflects the above overarching aims while addressing the following specific objectives:
- Engage local young people in a theatre arts program aimed at developing skills in acting, music, movement, technical theatre and production:
- Provide skills which will lead to direct employment opportunities (in the theatre industry) or indirect employment opportunities with skills that can be transferred to other industries (such as confidence, time-keeping and administration skills)
- Fill the gap left between sports, work, and school. Many young people who attend dance schools and/or study visual and performing arts at school find that they often have little opportunity for creative expression once they leave. Given the demise of the WA Academy of Performing Arts music theatre certificate, there is even more need for skills development opportunities for young people in the arts in Broome
- Encourage youth leadership and empowerment by having youth theatre directly managed by youth participants
- Provide opportunities for all community members in a remote regional community to access and participate in professional performing, visual and literary arts experiences
- Develop skills that are transferable to other life experiences such as:
- Creativity
- Problem solving
- Self confidence
- Self esteem
- Reliability and responsibility
- Social adjustment
- Team building
- Literacy visual and written
- Verbal and non-verbal language development
- Encourage cross-cultural collaboration and respect for the many different layers of the Kimberley community
- Encourage healthy lifestyles through provision of workshops in music, dance, movement, circus skills
- Encourage community connectedness
- Celebrate the local community through artistic expression
- Encourage the development of audiences for the arts
Sandfly Circus!

This programme focuses on indigenous young people with no age
limits. On Wednesday evenings there is a session for the general
community for people over ten years old. This session is open
to adults. All Circus session are held at PCYC.
In 2008 we intend to re mount the Mary Durack play Ship of Dreams about children in Broome in the 1960’s and establish ways to support the mounting of more locally written theatre works focussing on young people.
