With circus classes just starting back this week, it’s great to have some exciting circus visitors not far away. Working their way north on their WA regional tour are the members of Splash Test Dummies, an ensemble of Dummies Corp. who have been creating and performing award winning family-focused circus shows since 2012. They performed Splash Test Dummies at Perth’s Fringeworld in January and have been on the road through regional WA since then.

The Splash Test Dummies will perform at the Broome Civic Centre on March 20, but before that happens, they’ll be busy with an action-packed residency for Broome circus lovers. The performers will teach alongside our trainers in regular Act Belong Commit Sandfly Circus classes March 11 – March 18, and keen Broome students (including adults) will also be able to sign up for single skill workshops and masterclasses. This is such an exciting opportunity, because the team have some of the best skills in the country in juggling, unicycling, roue cyr, acrobatics, and clowning. (*Keep your eye on our Facebook page, more details coming soon.)

But it doesn’t stop at circus. TK has also been planning with the Dummies and Broome’s secondary schools to bring some tech workshops into the classroom. Dummies lighting and sound operator, Chris Pay, will lead workshops teaching teens the basics in performance tech, with the opportunity for one or two lucky participants to help run the lights and sound of the March 20 show. It’s our hope that young people can learn more about the diversity of career possibilities that exist in the performing arts.  Some of these possibilities aren’t very visible, especially when you live in a remote or regional town.

A special bonus for us is that Broome local, Rowan Thomas, is part of the tour. Rowan was a Sandfly participant and trainer for many years before furthering his circus studies in Melbourne and becoming an international performer. As always, it will be fantastic to welcome him home.

If you’d like to hear more about the opportunities we’re planning for the Splash Test Dummies' upcoming visit, feel free to be in touch at circus@theatrekimberley.org.au.

Dummies Corp is assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. Theatre Kimberley’s Act Belong Commit Sandfly Circus is proudly sponsored by Healthway. Without the generous support of these funders, these activities would not be possible.
