I’ve been in Broome for three weeks now and besides falling completely in love with Broome in August, I’m so impressed with the Sandfly Circus.
I had been talking with Franque Batty and Reuben Pedlar about ideas for the show via Skype for a couple of months before I got here. Now I’m here I’ve been getting to know the young people involved in the circus who are going to be the performers in TOTAL REBUILD! I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with the skill level here. Maybe it’s got something to do with the great weather, and the outdoor lifestyle. Broome has produced some of the rising stars in the contemporary circus world (Crystal Stacey, Rowan Thomas, Louis Biggs, Georgia Deguara) and it looks like that’s set to continue.
I had a great introduction to the Broome performing arts scene, emceeing BUST OUT a few weeks ago. What a great couple of nights we had, and what a fantastic line up of talent! It was great to have my old friend Tom Davis here to perform on the night but also to train the circus kids. It was also great to see the range of talent available here – Tanya McKenna version of “It’s all about the Bass” is still earworming! I’ve also managed to catch Cut the Sky (Marrageku), Circus Loritz, and A Taste of Broome – more culture in three weeks than I’m used to in Melbourne!
I’m so looking forward to the show! It’s going to be a stripped back and exuberant exhibition of circus skills, both traditional and new, cut with mischievious humour, and a sprinkling of grace and beauty. Hopefully it’ll “blow Broome away”.
