Worn Art Revamped - X Girl Red and the Tragic Pearl
In November 2018, Theatre Kimberley’s exciting new Worn Art production concludes the dramatic story of Pearl, a historical story about a Broome local from
mixed heritage.
X Girl Red
will thrill and entertain audiences over two spectacular nights of dance, theatre, costumes, and circus.
Theatre Kimberley, in partnership with community groups and artists from the Kimberley, Australia and overseas, will showcase the incredible, multicultural
talent, that Broome is renowned for, not just in the Kimberley, but all over Australia.
In 2011, after 14 years of continuous shows, Theatre Kimberley decided not to continue with its Worn Art productions, but the community demanded more.
Starting in 2014 with
The Great Pearl Tragedy,
followed in 2016 with the hugely successful (two sell-out shows)
Poppy – Child of the Lane,
2018 Worn Art audiences will be part of the final story in the Pearl trilogy.
X-Girl Red
follows the path of the Tragic Pearl as it returns from WW1. The pearl passes through the hands of the local multi-cultural groups who live in camps
along the foreshore of Roebuck Bay. The pearl finally returns home to the pearling beds off the coast of Bidyadanga, and the guardianship of the local
Indigenous people.

'We don't need a map' film screening, Sun Pictures, 4 March 2018
Posted: 26-Feb-2018

Warwick Thornton’s acclaimed documentary WE DON’T NEED A MAP will screen in Broome, with a special Q&A event planned with producer Brendan Fletcher
onSunday 4 March at 7 pm at Sun Pictures.
Described by Variety as “an eye-opening lesson for the world about the proud history and ongoing racial tensions that currently form the crux of the Australian
experience”, WE DON’T NEED A MAP is the story of the hijacking of an Australian icon. The Southern Cross is the most famous constellation in the southern
hemisphere. Ever since colonisation it’s been claimed, appropriated and hotly-contested for ownership by a radical range of Australian groups. But
for Aboriginal people, the meaning of this heavenly body is deeply spiritual. And just about completely unknown. For a start, the Southern Cross isn’t
even a cross - it’s a totem that’s deeply woven into the spiritual and practical lives of Aboriginal people.
Now one of Australia’s leading filmmakers, Warwick Thornton, tackles this fiery subject head-on in a bold, provocative and poetic essay-film. “We Don’t
Need a Map” asks tough questions about the place of the Southern Cross constellation in the Australian psyche. Imbued with Warwick’s cavalier spirit,
this is a fun and thought-provoking ride through Australia’s cultural and political landscape.
