Like most community run organisations Theatre Kimberley relies on the work of a volunteer Board to oversee the direction and activities of the organisation. Theatre Kimberley facilitates three theatre projects as part of its annual programme. They are
- Act Belong Commit Worn Art A wonderful project that sees artists, dancers, circus performers, and others with a wide range of theatrical persuasions come together to create a fantastic visual theatre that never fails to stun its audience. The project is an important part of Theatre Kimberley's commitment to community development through artistic expression.
- Sandfly Circus is a weekly circus programme for young people. We meet on Wednesday nights and other times to be decided. There is a small group of Sandfly Circus members who perform at a number of events around Broome. The whole Troupe put on a spectacular display of circus theatre in September where all 30+ members perform.
- In 2010 we began our Sandfly Circus outreach programme working with One Arm Point community. This has been a very successful programme with 10 of the 150 or so kids form the community travelling ot Broome to perform in out annual circus show. We hope to continue the circus outreach programme in the future. Pending funding.
We are excited by the opportunity to develop a program of activities that can help to sustain a remote regional community like Broome which has a reputation for artistic endeavour. Ironically though, there exists little in the way of opportunities for young people as emerging artists in our community. There is very little for young people to do in Broome that is creative, affordable and positive. We are committed to developing activities that will address this need.
Theatre Kimberley is committed to the development of skills in the Kimberley community and to providing opportunities for established and emerging local artists. By providing a regular program of theatre activities, we aim to develop audiences for the arts in the Kimberley and encourage the use of the arts to address social issues such as self-esteem, respect, substance abuse and community connectedness and provide employment development through skills transfer.
The constituted objectives of Theatre Kimberley are:
- To promote, develop, and provide performance theatre from the Kimberley region throughout Australia and overseas, and to foster and encourage training for people in all aspects of theatre production;
- To provide Kimberley residents with opportunities to experience regular theatre productions, and to promote and encourage patronage of and support for theatrical performance;
- To promote and encourage workshops, drama festivals, cooperative theatrical productions, and fundraising ventures of all kinds relating theatre and theatrical arts, including printing newsletters, books, and advertising material, and to liaise and cooperate with other bodies or organisations having similar objectives;
- To establish and maintain a register of scripts, stage property, technical equipment, wardrobe, lighting equipment, and all other tangible assets and things owned by the Association, and lend to, or hire to, members of the Association or to any theatrical group, for a fee or not, any script, stage property, theatrical equipment, wardrobe, lighting equipment, and other tangible asset or thing.
