Like most community run organisations Theatre Kimberley relies on the work of a volunteer Board to oversee the direction and activities of the organisation. For the past eight years, the main activity of Theatre Kimberley has been the highly successful annual community event, Be Active Worn Art (renamed Act Belong Commit Worn Art in 2009). This is an eagerly awaited event that engages community members from all walks of life in the creation and exhibition of wearable artworks, and generates approximately $30,000 per annum in door sales over two nights, such is its popularity. The project is an important part of Theatre Kimberley's commitment to community development through artistic expression. In future years, we hope to take Act Belong Commit Worn Art to the wider Kimberley region with satellite performances in more remote areas, involving local artists and community members. We began this process with creation workshops taking place in Derby in 2005 and 2006.
In 2005 a new Board was elected and at a strategic planning session the Board discussed a long term vision for Theatre Kimberley that includes the development of a youth theatre program and an annual professional performance program to complement the community engagement and development aspects of Worn Art.
We are excited by the opportunity to develop a program of activities that can help to sustain a remote regional community like Broome which has a reputation for artistic endeavour and was the birthplace of the work of such artists as Jimmy Chi, Pigram Brothers, Helen Norton and the breeding ground for acclaimed musicals like Bran Nue Dae and Corrugation Road. Ironically though, there exists little in the way of opportunities for young people as emerging artists in our community. There is very little for young people to do in Broome that is creative, affordable and positive. We are committed to developing activities that will address this need.
In 2006, we identified and sourced the appropriate funding and sponsorship to support our future activities. Our program for the next three years is designed to engage the community in the arts and provide opportunities for community members and will include;
- The establishment of a program of youth theatre skills development activities through wide community consultation
- Circus and physical theatre training building on skills and interest generated by Worn Art tissue training in 2005, Lunar Circus 2005, and Big Mama productions 2002 and previous years.
- Production and development of original theatre works
- Development of a youth theatre company
- Continued development of the community art event Act Belong Commit Worn Art
- Development and production of an annual theatre production that celebrates the talents of local established and emerging artists
Theatre Kimberley is committed to the development of skills in the Kimberley community and to providing opportunities for established and emerging local artists. By providing a regular program of theatre activities, we aim to develop audiences for the arts in the Kimberley and encourage the use of the arts to address social issues such as self-esteem, respect, substance abuse and community connectedness and provide employment development through skills transfer.
The constituted objectives of Theatre Kimberley are:
